A maiden half-century in Tasmanian colours from Teague Wyllie and an unbroken 153-run partnership between Jake Doran and Brad Hope have put the Tigers in a commanding position after the opening day of their Sheffield Shield clash against NSW.
Sent in to bat by the Blues at Ninja Stadium, Tasmania reached 5-335 at stumps, with Doran (69 not out) and Hope (82 not out) negotiating the second new ball to lay the foundations for a sizeable first-innings total.
Doran continued his outstanding start to the season, passing 5000 career Sheffield Shield runs on his way to a third half-century in as many matches, while Hope made the most of his return to the starting XI after missing last week's thrilling victory over Victoria.
Hope's unbeaten knock also continued his strong form against the Blues, having made 53 not out when the sides met at Cricket Central earlier this month.
After claiming two early wickets, NSW was made to toil as Caleb Jewell (46) and captain Jordan Silk (37) both made starts without going on to post significant scores.
However, it was Wyllie who provided one of the day's highlights, the former Western Australian showing his class with a fluent 64 after a challenging start to life in his new state.
Having managed just 47 runs across his first four innings for Tasmania, the 22-year-old struck seven boundaries and a six before his promising innings ended when he chipped a return catch to Jake Scott.
"It's nice to finally be amongst the runs," Wyllie said.
"You want to make a mark and do well for the team and contribute to winning, and probably hasn't quite gone to plan yet, but to be able to contribute today in some sort of way was really nice.
"Would have been nice to kick on and make a big score, but to be able to sit back at the end of the day and the guys are in a really good position [is great].
"Hopefully we keep driving the game forward and bring a win to Tasmania by Monday."
Despite Wyllie's contribution, the contest remained delicately poised when Silk's dismissal left Tasmania at 5-182.
But Doran and Hope wrestled back control with a superb sixth-wicket stand, frustrating the NSW attack throughout the final session and ensuring the hosts finished the day firmly on top.
Wyllie was full of praise for the pair, particularly Doran's ability to repeatedly deliver when the Tigers find themselves under pressure.
"It's a luxury having guys like Jake and Brad at six and seven, to be able to have the experience like 'Dores', and we've seen him do it time and time again.
"The team can be in a little bit of trouble, and he keeps finding ways to dig us out.
"Brad would have been disappointed not to play last game after his performance in round one, but he showed again that he's got the class to be able to perform at this level."
Tasmania made three changes to the XI which defeated Victoria, with Tim Ward, Hope and experienced seamer Jackson Bird replacing Ben McDermott, Marcus Bean and Nikhil Chaudhary.
Ward returned after being a late withdrawal from the Victoria clash, while McDermott was unable to overcome a back concern, Bean was rested following a heavy workload across the opening two rounds and Chaudhary was sidelined by a knee complaint.
The Tigers will resume on Saturday looking to turn their strong opening-day position into a match-defining first-innings total.
