The Tigers have given Maisy Gibson her first victory as captain, producing a stirring recovery to defeat Western Australia by 26 runs and split their opening round WNCL matches in Perth.
After suffering a four-wicket loss at the WACA on Tuesday, Tasmania bounced back on Thursday despite crashing to 3-0 inside the opening 10 balls and later surviving a series of dropped catches in the closing stages.
Sent in by the Warriors, the Tigers could hardly have made a worse start, losing Lizelle Lee, Kate Pelle and Ella Hayward without a run on the board.
But Nicola Carey (87 from 97 balls) and Naomi Stalenberg (55 from 80) steadied the innings before wresting back control with a superb 156-run partnership.
Just as the pair looked ready to accelerate, both fell in the space of five deliveries, but Courtney Sippel and Tabatha Saville ensured Tasmania maintained its momentum and pushed towards a formidable total.
Following a career-best 79 in Tuesday’s season opener, Saville backed up with another fluent half-century, cracking seven boundaries in a 47-ball 56.
Sippel also brought up a half-century, finishing unbeaten on 54, before Lauren Smith added a late flourish with three boundaries in the final over to lift Tasmania to 7-299.
Sippel (3-47) then made an early impact with the ball, removing first-match centurion Beth Mooney, before Sara Kennedy (2-37) claimed her maiden WNCL wicket when she had Chloe Piparo caught behind.
Those early blows forced the required run rate above seven an over, leaving Western Australia chasing the game for much of the innings.
Half-centuries from Mikayla Hinkley and Chloe Ainsworth kept the Warriors in the contest, while a number of spilled chances from Tasmania gave the hosts some late hope.
But the Tigers did enough to close out the contest, restricting Western Australia to 273 and securing a 26-run victory to leave Perth with a 1-1 record from their opening two matches.
Tasmania’s victory was soured by a calf injury to spinner Smith, who was forced from the field after the opening delivery of her sixth over.
