In exciting news, Cricket Tasmania has announced the appointment of Maisy Gibson as the eighth WNCL captain of the Tasmanian Tigers.
Gibson is taking over from Elyse Villani who will miss the upcoming season for the birth of her first child. Villani is expected to return to the Tigers squad for the 2027/28 season.
"Im honoured to be given the opportunity to captain Tasmania and represent an organisation that means so much to me. Elyse Villani has set an outstanding standard as a leader, and I'm excited by the challenge of building on the strong foundation she has created." said Maisy Gibson
Since making the move from New South Wales to Tasmania in 2019, Gibson has established herself as a key figure in the Tasmanian Tigers lineup. She made an immediate impact in her debut season, earning the Veronica Pyke Medal as Female Tigers Player of the Year, an honour she claimed again in 2024/25 following another outstanding season.
Throughout her time in Tasmania, Gibson has demonstrated exceptional resilience and commitment to the Tigers program. She has consistently returned strongly and remained an influential presence within the squad, both on and off the field.
Salliann Beams General Manager of High Performance at Cricket Tasmania said "Maisy is an outstanding person who leads through the strength of her character, her genuine care for others and the standards she sets every day. She is also an exceptionally skilful and intelligent cricketer who has earned enormous respect across the playing group. Her determination to bring the WNCL trophy back to Tasmania is clear, and we’re incredibly proud to appoint her as Tigers captain and excited to see the impact, she will have in the role."
A respected leader and experienced campaigner, Gibson's appointment reflects the high regard in which she is held by teammates, coaches and staff. Her professionalism, determination and passion for Tasmanian cricket make her a fitting choice to lead the Tigers into the 2026/27 season.
Gibson is set to make her captaincy debut when the Tigers open their 2026/27 campaign against Western Australia on 29 September. Tasmanian fans will have to wait until 19 December to see their new captain lead the side at home, with the Tigers' first home fixture of the season scheduled to be played at Ninja Stadium.
