A season wrap up with Aurora Energy

The past cricket season marked a first in the partnership between Aurora Energy and Cricket Tasmania. On a Tuesday morning in early December, key staff from Aurora Energy and Cricket Tasmania gathered in the board room at Bellerive Oval. Two Tasmanian businesses united to create and implement a partnership that would provide value to the state. The partnership, a three-year agreement that extends across the W/BBL Hobart Hurricanes seasons, National Indigenous Cricket Championships, Community Cricket Volunteer Awards, and School Breakfast Clubs.

W/BBL Hobart Hurricanes and Tasmanian Tigers: Aurora Energy held a notable presence across the WBBL and BBL Hurricanes seasons, as well as the Tasmanian Tigers domestic seasons. Aurora Energy could be seen “Bringing the Energy to every game” with their signage standing high and mighty on the beloved Aurora Energy Hill at Ninja Stadium.

This was on further display during the 16th over of BBL Hurricanes home matches with the Aurora Energy Dance Cam. A crowd favourite amongst the kids, this often resulted in a dance-off to win a Hurricanes and Aurora Energy prize pack, with plenty of merchandise and goodies.

aurora+ members were also given the chance to “skip the queue” and enter the stadium through the aurora+ VIP Line at the Northen Gate entrance, which proved valuable during the finals as a combined 29,000 fans poured into the stadium.

National Indigenous Championships: Cricket Tasmania was proud to have Aurora Energy as their partner of the Tasmanian National Indigenous Cricket Championship (NICC) squad. Aurora Energy contributed financially to supporting the team’s travel expenses and participation costs in the championship, which was held in Mackay from April 2nd to 7th 2025. Aurora Energy’s logo could be seen on the right sleeve of the playing jersey for Tasmania. The jerseys were a bespoke design, created by Carly, the daughter of Guy Grey, who is a key member of the program providing cultural and coaching support.

Carly explains the inspiration and story behind the design: “This year’s shirt shows the 9 tribes of Lutruwita (Tasmania) prior to invasion. The front of the shirt shows 11 Yula (mutton birds) signifying 11 players on the field and honouring the traditional practice of collecting Yula which continues today after thousands of years. We also pay homage to shell necklaces and kelp water carriers on the sleeves as a continuation of cultural practices today. We also have the walkabout wickets logo on the collar and thylacine paw prints on the back whilst also honouring the Imparja cup theme from Alice Springs of “Two strong cultures” - the Indigenous culture and cricket culture. The circles and dots acknowledge we are on the traditional lands of Mackay as the captain overseeing the other 10 players on the cricket ground.”

Community Cricket Volunteer Awards:  Aurora Energy continued their support of community level cricket programs across the state by sponsoring the Volunteer of the Year Award, with Jamie Chilcott taking the honours for this season. Each year, 7 award winners from different categories are recognised for their contributions and ability to go above and beyond in supporting their club, region or state, ensuring that Tasmanian cricket continues to grow. The awards are a great opportunity to recognise these winners for their commitment to the game in Tasmania. Aurora Energy showed their support and gratitude by providing Jamie with 1 month of free electricity via Powers Hours, providing some financial relief during the cold winter month of June.

School Breakfast Clubs: In a further display of community collaboration, Cricket Tasmania, Aurora Energy and Variety Tasmania teamed up to share a specially designed ‘Hurricanes Smoothie’ with three lucky primary schools. Students from Goodwood Primary School, Gagebrook Primary School, and East Derwent Primary School were treated with a nutritious breakfast treat to promote the importance of nutrition and physical activity. The smoothie which has been specially formulated to help kids Grow, Glow and Go, and Captain Hurricane always guarantees a good laugh amongst the kids.

Variety Tasmania CEO, Mohammad Aldergham, said the offering is a great example of how like-minded business can collaborate to benefit Tasmanian children.

“Our Variety School Breakfast Club is in 40 schools across Tasmania and is proven to benefit learning in the classroom,” Mr Aldergham said.

“Adding a special experience with the Hobart Hurricanes further reinforces the importance of healthy eating and physical activity to help improve kids’ engagement, academic outcomes and behaviour at school.”

Aurora Energy Acting CEO, James Chisolm, said Aurora Energy is a supporter of the Hobart Hurricanes and Variety Tasmania, and this new initiative is a natural synergy between all three organisations to support learning, healthy eating and physical activity amongst school children.

“As a 100 per cent Tasmanian-owned business, we are thrilled to partner with local organisations who drive real impact within Tasmanian classrooms,” Mr Chisolm said.

“We believe every Tassie child deserves the best start in life – no matter where they live – and this collaboration is a great example on how working together can effect real change.”

With the first year of the partnership now in the books, both Aurora Energy and Cricket Tasmania are looking forward to building upon this success moving forward and are excited with the opportunities of the upcoming season.
