CTPL Preview - Grand final rematch

IT will be a grand final rematch in the men’s CTPL round two when Lindisfarne host University.

Both teams come off incredibly tight round one victories, with the Lightning winning by nine runs over New Town and the Lions escaping with a one-run victory over the Greater Northern Raiders.

Uni will be out for revenge after going down in last year’s decider – on the back of unforgettable, record-breaking last wicket stand between Lindisfarne captain Charlie Wakim and playing-coach Matt Wilkie.

The Lions will be boosted by the inclusion of Tigers spinner Paddy Dooley.

Lindisfarne will be without last week’s captain Jarrod Freeman for the one-day clash but will get back last season’s league leading run-scorer Mac Wright.

South Hobart-Sandy Bay had to watch from the sidelines in round one but will open its 2023-24 campaign at the Twin Ovals against Kingborough.

Sharks coach Richard Allanby was a keen onlooker on the first round last weekend.

“It’s a pretty even competition with lots of youth being given opportunities, which is great,” Allanby said.

“Considering we also have a bye in round five it was probably not ideal to miss round one, but it gave us a chance to see what the competition looks like. I also had to mow the lawns.”

The Sharks will welcome back a couple of batters to strengthen their side from last season.

“The return of Sean Willis and Caleb Oakes to the top order gives us some stability,” Allanby said.

“We also have a great bunch of 17 to 20-year-olds knocking on the door who will hopefully play for the club for a long time.”

In the final game, North Hobart will be heading up the Midlands Highway to take on the Raiders at Riverside, with both sides looking to record their first wins of this season, while Clarence, New Town and Glenorchy have the bye.

The women’s second and third rounds – played back-to-back on Sunday – will pit last week’s winners in one match, and the defeated duo in the other.

The Raiders could not have done more in the start of their T20 title with two brutal victories over New Town as Greater Northern’s batters feasted on the Bucks.

However, the Raiders will face stiffer competition on Sunday when they travel to the TCA Ground to take on North Hobart twice.

The Demons dominated Clarence in round one, so the clash with the Raiders should be a ding-dong battle.

New Town endured a torrid time in Launceston, suffering two heavy defeats at the hands of the Raiders and will be looking to rebound against Clarence at New Town Oval in consecutive games.

The Bucks will be looking for more potency with the ball, failing to take a wicket in the first match and only two in the second, while the Roos also had plenty to work on after its opening game of the 2023-24 season.
