Continuing the Tasmanian Tigers re-signing blitz ahead of the 2025-26 domestic season, the women’s program can confirm that former Australian all-rounder Nicola Carey and young gun Amy Smith have signed new deals.
Carey, who was already under contract for 2025-26, has extended her deal to the end of the 2026-27 season and will be looking to continue the strong form she has found in Tasmania over the past few seasons.
“I’ve loved playing for the Tigers over the last few years, so extending my time down here was an easy decision, and I’m really grateful to CT for having me around for at least the next couple of years!” said Carey.
She has dominated women’s domestic cricket since signing in 2020 from New South Wales.
In her 48 games for Tasmania, Carey has amassed an incredible 2141 runs at an average of 53.52 with six hundreds and 14 fifties, leading the overall run scoring in the WNCL for Tasmania.
She also sits third in the overall runs for the state, having taken 59 wickets, only trailing Maisy Gibson and Molly Strano.
Carey’s 2024-25 season saw her lead the run-scoring tally for the Tasmanian Tigers with 354 runs.
She also took 19 wickets, which saw her finish second in the Veronica Pyke Medal (Female Tasmanian Tigers Best and Fairest).
Tasmanian Tigers Assistant Coach, Graeme Beghin, has been impressed with Carey’s consistency since coming into the program at the start of last season.
“We are lucky to have someone like Nic in our line-up, her experience, professionalism and performances have played a big part in the Tigers success.
“I have been impressed with Nic’s consistency. She understands her game and applies skill and temperament in all situations.
“Nic continues to develop her game and I’m confident she’ll have a huge impact this 25/26 season,” said Beghin.
Amy Smith, still incredibly early in her cricket career at 20 years old, has already played 40 games for the Tasmanian Tigers in the WNCL since her debut in 2019 and has re-signed for another season.
“I'm really looking forward to signing on with the Tigers coming into my sixth season!
“I’ve learned so much being a part of this team, and I am excited by the upcoming opportunities of playing the brand of cricket we like to play and hopefully getting back on the winner’s board!” said Smith.
Smith has been a mainstay in the Tigers WNCL squad, after making her debut for Tasmania at the age of 14 and has since developed into a talented all-round leg-spinner, having taken 49 wickets in her career for Tasmania.
Selected for her leg-spin bowling early in her career, her batting has continued to improve and now averages 21.41 with the bat with a WNCL 50 to her name, moving up in Jude Coleman’s batting line-up into the middle order.
Following the departures of Heather Graham and Molly Strano, Smith will play with the bat will continue to evolve, and her run-scoring prowess will be increasingly important.
Smith was also selected in the Australia ‘A’ series against England earlier this year, playing in the T20 and 50-over matches.
Tasmanian Tigers Assistant Coach Clive Rose discussed Smith’s development.
"Amy's development over the past few seasons has been great to watch, and her leg-spin bowling has been a crucial part of our attack, as she seemingly manages to get a breakthrough whenever we need one.
"What a lot of people outside of the Tigers program wouldn't know is the amount of time she puts in to improve her fielding, and I feel as though she is one of the best point fielders in the game.
"For Amy to be selected in the Australia 'A' squad last month was a great reward for the effort she has put in, and she will continue to be a vital component of our squad for the coming seasons,” stated Rose.
Carey and Smith have joined several Tigers players who have signed new contracts, with the full women’s squad likely to be announced on Friday.
