A rangy pace bowler with excellent technique and accuracy, Lawrence Neil-Smith has stepped up superbly in the absence of mainstay Jackson Bird, displaying all the qualities of an experienced opening bowler despite being just 22.
Making the move from New South Wales to Tasmania in 2018, Neil-Smith made his Tigers debut in 2019, taking 11 wickets in his first Sheffield Shield campaign. However, he has taken his game to the next level so far in the current campaign – a maiden 5 wicket haul against Western Australia and two night watchman half centuries have catapulted Neil-Smith into the spotlight.
With 13 wickets to his name already at an average of 25, Neil-Smith has the chance to be one of the breakout bowlers of the domestic season, and will continue to benefit from a system with excellent line and length bowlers such as Jackson Bird and Peter Siddle.
