The Tasmanian Tigers have today announced the final two contracts on their 2015-16 list with local talent Tom Triffitt back in the red, yellow and green after signing a one-year deal and 18-year-old local fast-bowler Riley Meredith the sixth rookie for the Tigers.
Tasmanian Tigers’ Chairman of Selectors Michael Farrell said the squad needs to hit the ground running and summarised the 2015-16 line-up and the signing of multiple wicketkeeper/batsmen with five players on the list able to put on the gloves.
“It is no secret that we didn’t get the output we wanted from our wicket-keeper/batsmen this season. This is a challenge they will all face with genuine competition in the line-up for 2015-16,” he said.
“We worked very hard this year to put together this squad and we have six rookies with the average age just under 20. We have a good mix of youth and experience which is a good well-balanced position to be in.
“We have really strengthened the squad as far as youth goes and there is no doubt that the experienced players have to play well,” Farrell said.
Farrell said the Tasmanian Tigers go into the 2015-16 season with 64% of the players Tasmanian-born and said the interstate recruitment process is all part of the changing cricketing landscape and what needs to be done to secure the best most-balanced team.
Wicket-keeper/batsman Tom Triffitt said he is excited to be back in his home of Tasmania.
“It’s been a big few years and it is time to sit down and reassess my goals. I’m eager to get some family around me and I’m really enjoying my cricket.
“I’m happy with my progress on and off the field. The key is getting the work/life balance right. I have some good people around me and I’m ready to go. I’m feeling positive but there is still a lot of hard work to be done. I think my best cricket is yet to come,” Triffitt said.
New Tigers’ Rookie Meredith was in the Tasmanian U19s team last season and took 7-20, including a double hat-trick for Clarence vs Lindisfarne in the Cricket Tasmania Premier League competition.
Meredith said he was pleased that his hard work pre-season saw him rewarded with a contract for Tasmania.
“I’m looking forward to getting amongst the team and picking the brains of the senior members in the team. I am keen to learn about how they went from youth players to where they are now and how they go about their cricket,” he said.
The players are currently on annual leave and the pre-season plan is to be discussed in the coming weeks as well as the leadership program for 2015-16.
