Glenorchy Cricket Club receive this award for their work on two substantial junior cricket programs for players in Hobart’s northern suburbs.
After many tireless hours of work, Glenorchy Cricket Club’s (CC) Junior Cricket Coordinator, Damien West, was able to organise and facilitate the Northern Suburbs Community Cricket Shield, which has now been held for two years running. This program grew substantially despite the COVID-interrupted 2020/21 season, with five clubs within the area sending their junior players to participate. Damien was able to organise multiple partnerships with local businesses and the local MP, Elise Archer, to gain support for the event. The Shield this season consisted of four teams with 15 players in each. Each team participated in three round robin matches and a final. The Gala Day- style format was a great opportunity for clubs and players to show their talents to a large, local crowd, whilst Glenorchy CC also provided the perfect opportunity for young players to meet and interact with the senior players at the club, as each team was appointed a coach and assistant coach, all who were all senior players from the club.
Then, during the New Year break in the Hurricanes Junior League, Glenorchy saw the opportunity for some of their Under 13s group to play more cricket. Once again, Damien West, in conjunction with Westbury Cricket Club and South Launceston Cricket Club, arranged for a representative side from Glenorchy CC’s juniors to travel up to the northern region of the state to play against both Westbury and South Launceston. This opportunity provided a fantastic learning experience for all involved.
