Tasmanian Jarrod Freeman has been selected in Australia’s ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup squad, which will travel to New Zealand early next year.

Freeman has been a consistent performer over the course of the Under 19 National Championships with both bat and ball for Tasmania.

“It’s an honor to be recognized that I’m up to the level and it’s an honor to represent my country at the World Cup,” he said.

“Ben Rohrer gave me a call to give me the news and I was over the moon. It’s probably made my year.”

The teenager, who is also the Hobart Hurricanes’ Northern Rookie for BBL|07, has been one of the mainstays of the Tasmanian lineup over the course of the Under 19 Championships – hitting 283 runs at 47.2 and taking 9 wickets, including a haul of 4-23 against Victoria Metro.

“It’s been really good from an individual point of view, it was unfortunate to get beaten in the quarter finals but we’ve been happy as a team,” he said.

“We tied with NSW and we beat the CA XI who are in the final and Vic Metro who have been known to be a really good team, so it’s been good to improve on the last couple of years where we’ve probably been in the lower half of the standings.”

To pull on the green and gold at a World Cup would be a dream come true Freeman, who has already had a taste of Futures League cricket with Tasmania.

“It’s something I’ve always dreamed of, to play for Australia at any level but especially at a World Cup. I can’t wait.”

The ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup commences on 13 January, with the final to be played on 3 February.

Australia has been drawn in Pool B, and begins its World Cup campaign against India on 14 January at Tauranga’s Bay Oval, before matches against Zimbabwe on 17 January and Papua New Guinea 19 January at Lincoln Green in Christchurch.

The squad will head into camp in Brisbane in early January, before playing practice matches against Sri Lanka on 9 January and South Africa on 11 January at the Hagley Park complex in Christchurch.
