A stunning opening spell with the ball from James Faulkner and a century to Ben McDermott propelled Tasmania to a five-wicket Marsh Cup win over South Australia in Adelaide today.

The Redbacks' top order crumbled within the initial few overs at Karen Rolton Oval before McDermott 103* and a maiden List A half-century for Caleb Jewell saw the Tigers takeover.

Matthew Wade then hit 20 in a 41-run partnership with McDermott on his return to lead to Tasmania following his England tour before Jordan Silk's 42-run stand with the reigning Player of the Tournament all but ended the game.

The Tigers' run chase was far more comfortable than its Marsh Cup opener against Victoria in Perth and they'll now look forward to the return fixture against SA on Tuesday at the same venue with greater confidence.

The victory was setup within the first 12 balls of the game as Callum Ferguson was clean bowled by Jackson Bird before Australian representatives Travis Head and Alex Carey fell to James Faulkner in the next over.

A series of small SA partnerships would follow but their powerhitters were already back in the shed and an underpar score always looked likely.

Each of the Tasmanian quicks again as part of another great performance from the bowling unit.

Tuesday's rematch begins at 10:30am with live scores and live stream on cricket.com.au,
