Emerging Tasmanian umpire Sam Nogajski has been awarded a scholarship in
the Australian Sports Commission's (ASC) 2012 National Officiating Scholarships
(NOS).
Nogajski made his first-class umpiring debut in the Bupa Sheffield Shield match
between Queensland and NSW at the Gabba in November and this scholarship
will only help him to continue his development.
The NOS aims to provide an avenue to assist in the development of officials and
their mentors in a high performance officiating environment.
The scholarship provides professional development opportunities in a range of
areas, practical experience at a high performance level together with mentoring
and coaching to improve officiating skills.
Nogajski will attend the induction workshop held on the Gold Coast in February
and then a series of satellite workshops hosted throughout the year in Sydney,
Melbourne and the inclusion of a Mentor workshop in June.
Victorian and CA National Panel Umpire Bob Parry will be Nogajski's mentor for
the duration of the program.
Further to Nogajski’s achievement Tasmanian umpires Michael Graham-Smith
and Jamie Mitchell have been appointed to the Under 19 Championships to be
held Adelaide starting this month.
In previous years each state and territory were asked to supply umpires for the
championships, however this year Cricket Australia has taken responsibility for
the appointments and selected the best emerging umpires in the country
irrespective of their region.
Tasmanian State Director of Umpiring Richard Widows said the significance of
these achievements is exciting for the future of umpiring in Tasmania.
“To be the only state to have two umpires selected for the championships,
coupled with Sam’s recent appointment for the Sheffield Shield match is
fantastic.
“It demonstrates Tasmania is being noted for the quality of umpires coming
through its ranks, “he said.
