The Tasmanian Roar have gone down to the Western Fury by seven wickets in their opening match of the WNCL season in Adelaide.

After winning the toss, Brooke Hepburn elected to bat first in her first game in charge of the Roar with Stafanie Daffara, Erin Fazackerley and Courtney Webb making their debuts for Tasmania.

Laura Wright and Corinne Hall were early casualties for the Roar, bring Georgia Redmayne and Daffara together.

The two set about rebuilding the inning, putting on 54 for the third wicket before Daffara was trapped LBW for 37.

That trigged a middle order collapse, with the Roar losing 4-42 to be in trouble at 6-115.

That brought debutante Fazackerley to the wicket and together with Redmayne got things back on track with a 74-run stand.

Fazackerley was eventually dismissed for 27 from 43 deliveries in an impressive first-up performance with the bat.

But Redmayne was the star for the Roar, the wicketkeeper-batter falling just short of what would have been a fine century – out for 89 from 124 balls shortly after Fazackerley departed.

Skipper Hepburn was the last batter out, bringing the Roar’s inning to a close in the final over with the score at 222.

The Fury got off to a flying start in reply, with openers Nicole Bolton and Chloe Piparo putting on 111 for the first wicket.

Courtney Webb eventually made the breakthrough to claim Piparo for 56, claiming Elyse Villani shortly after that for 10.

Fazackerley then took her first wicket with Heather Graham caught and bowled, but Amy Jones (48*) and Bolton (93*) then arrested the Tasmanian momentum to secure victory for the Fury in the 39th over.

The Tasmanian Roar will take on South Australia tomorrow in their second 2017-18 WNCL match tomorrow.
